Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi delivered an outstanding performance in Spain. The athlete finished in a time of 26:32 to establish a new course record at the Nationale-Nederlanden San Silvestre Vallecana. This is now the second-fastest 10K recorded on the road, surpassing a tough challenge from Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo in a thrilling sprint to the finish. Spain’s Adel Mechaal took third place, solidifying his status as the top Spanish runner.
The men’s race showcased elite competition, with both Aregawi and Kiplimo living up to expectations. They led early on, setting a rapid pace that quickly reduced the field to just six runners within the first few kilometers. By the eight-minute mark, it was clear it was a two-man contest, with Aregawi and Kiplimo battling closely for the record.
The excitement at Vallecas Stadium peaked as the two raced toward the finish line. In a nail-biting finish, Aregawi narrowly defeated Kiplimo. With this he managed to achieve his second Vallecana victory and broke the course record at 26:31. Mechaal’s impressive time of 27:40 earned him a podium finish, just ahead of France’s Felix Bour.
