Shelby Houlihan finished second with 8:38.26, and Jess Hull took third place with 8:38.28.

Notably, Houlihan previously served a four-year ban from the sport – upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on appeal – for the use of nandrolone, an anabolic steroid.

Freweyni’s victory marks her as the only Ethiopian athlete to win medals in three different distances at the World Indoor Championships. She has secured medals in the 800 meters (silver in Belgrade 2022), 1500 meters (gold in Glasgow 2024), and now 3000 meters (gold in Nanjing 2024) across three successive editions of the event.

Meanwhile, in the men’s 3000 meters, Berihu Aregawi claimed silver with a season’s best (SB) time of 7:46.25. He battled pre-race favorite Jakob Ingebrigtsen (7:46.09) throughout the race, narrowly conceding in the final meters after a close contest. Australian Ky Robinson finished third, just a step ahead of American Sam Gilman, who made his debut for Team USA.
