Ethiopia has lost one of its brilliant football heroes in Mulugeta Kebede, who has passed away after a long battle with a chronic illness.

Mulugeta was a striker who combined boldness with skill, speed, and agility. In the 1970s and 1980s, his name stood tall in Ethiopian football. As a devoted servant of Saint George, he was also a key player for the Ethiopian national team.

Born in Dessie, Mulugeta was introduced to football at Holeta Stadium, where many talents emerged. In the early football days, he played for Wollo Pepsi and the Wollo Special Team, becoming a local hero. After that, he became the star player who made the Wollo Team unbeatable. His extraordinary talent earned him a call-up to the national team, where he became a prolific scorer. He played a crucial role in Ethiopia’s 1980 CECAFA Cup victory, proving himself as a big-game player.

A nightmare for defenders, Mulugeta was a fast, fearless striker who could create magic in crucial matches. His speed, positioning, and intelligence made him one of Ethiopia’s greatest forwards.

After making his name with Wollo Pepsi and the Wollo Special Team, he joined Saint George, where he cemented his legacy. This decision was despite interest from major Addis Ababa clubs like Mebrat Hail.

With Saint George, he won seven Ethiopian Premier League titles, six Ethiopian Cups, and one CECAFA Club Championship. He also set records as the top scorer three times and was named best player three times. His unstoppable attacking presence made Saint George’s frontline feared across Ethiopia. Fans even nicknamed him “Ashebir” for his ability to trick defenders. Saint George supporters have always adored Mulugeta, and even after his retirement, the special bond with the club remained unbroken.

The players who shared the pitch with him and the fans who watched him could never stop praising his ability.

Mulugeta was put to rest on June 12, 2025.
