Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Ethiopian Athletics Federation has announced that Tigist Assefa, who recently secured a silver medal at the Paris Olympics and set the women-only marathon record in London, will participate in the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Japan.
The federation confirmed that discussions were held with Tigist’s coach, Gemedo Dedefo, to finalize her participation in the prestigious tournament. Dedefo emphasized the significance of representing Ethiopia on the global stage, stating, “There is nothing greater than shouldering the responsibility set by the people and the country.”
Initially, Tigist was contemplating a run in the Berlin Marathon, motivated by the desire to reclaim the world record following its recent establishment by Kenyan athlete Ruth Chepngetich, who clocked an impressive 2:09:56 in Chicago.
Tigist’s participation in the World Championships is highly anticipated, as she aims to solidify her status among the elite in the long-distance running field.
