Ethiopian athlete Tsige Gebreselma made history by breaking the world record at the Lisbon Half Marathon in Portugal. Tsige emerged victorious in 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 21 seconds, surpassing pre-race favorite Ruth Chepengtik of Kenya.

Ruth Chepengtik, who had been widely tipped to win the race, finished second with a time of 1 hour, 6 minutes, and 20 seconds, while Sweden’s Abeba Aregawi secured third place.

The 24-year-old Tsige, already a decorated athlete, previously won silver at the 2023 World Cross Country Championships and bronze at the 2019 Junior World Cross Country Championships. Her record-breaking performance in Lisbon further cements her status as one of the world’s top long-distance runners.
