Game Changer or Setback? The Future of Ethiopian Premier League Broadcasting with DSTV

Since 2020, DSTV, Africa’s largest pay-TV provider, has been broadcasting the Ethiopian top flight. DSTV signed a five-year deal worth 22 million dollars, which was labeled staggering and too good to refuse.

Ethiopian football fans have enjoyed following their local teams from the comfort of their couches. With the league being far from the capital and many fans unable to travel to the various regional towns, this deal has been a game changer for many.

SuperSport has also provided an opportunity for Ethiopian journalists and broadcasters to showcase their talent on the continental stage.

However, the broadcast process wasn’t without its blips along the way. DSTV was unable to use its own equipment for broadcasts and was forced to borrow from local broadcasters. Last season, there were also issues raised about payment delays to its employees.

With French TV company Canal+ working on acquiring full ownership of DSTV, changes in broadcast deals are to be expected.

In the off-season, there has been speculation that the Ethiopian Premier League will not be shown on SuperSport channels during the 2024/25 season. Now, Soccer Ethiopia has reported that the matchday three games will not be broadcast. Reports have not confirmed if the league will resume on SuperSport after the international break.

The possible stoppage of the broadcast poses a problem for the league. It will not only halt financial gain and marketing but will also create difficulties for media outlets and fans who wish to follow the league closely.
